The workshop on Advances in Analog Circuit Design (AACD) has been held once per year since 1992, each time in a different location in Europe. The workshop brings together a group of about 100 analog/RF circuit design experts (from academia and industry), who are personally advancing the frontiers of analog circuit design, and to brainstorm on new possibilities and future developments.

PhD students form a substantial part of the participants at AACD. Once we learned about the existence of the EURO-DOTS program, we applied for it and received accreditation since 2013. As CP, an important motivation is to enable more PhD students to participate in the workshop thanks to the financial sponsorship from EURO-DOTS. At the same time, the addition of an assignment and a formal exam to the workshop program benefits the students to be activated, gain more knowledge on the presented topics and to receive credits for their contribution.

The students participating in the EURO-DOTS program have unanimously expressed their high satisfaction of the technical content and quality of the speakers, the assignment, and the workshop as a whole. They appreciate the availability of strong experts in the field and the fact that true state-of-the-art is being discussed. In particular, the substantial amount of time allocated to discussions and interactive panel sessions is valued. The individual assignment, handed out after the actual workshop, is considered as a good way to further examine the concepts presented at the workshop, and to deepen knowledge on particular topics of interest.

As provider of AACD, we are very pleased to participate in EURO-DOTS. EURO-DOTS offers a well-organized European platform and gives clear and efficient support during the process. Being part of EURO-DOTS has helped to increase interest and visibility of the AACD workshop and it enabled more PhD students to participate and receive credits. We are looking forward to continue within the EURO-DOTS program in 2015 and beyond.

MEAD organizes courses regularly since 1988 in the area of IC design. It was a very straightforward decision to submit these courses to EURO-DOTS platform due to the common field of the required topics.
The Students’ benefits often mentioned via testimonials or course evaluations are at least four:

  • financial (scholarships enable the participation)
  • scientific (technical knowledge improves quickly during short bu intensive classes)
  • academic (ECTS credits are obtained)
  • social & career (during courses students get in contact with other participants, and particularly with industry engineers)

Students’ evaluations are generally very positive. They always acknowledge the importance of the Euro-Dots program which allows them to attend the courses thanks to the scholarships resulting to be at very low cost or no cost at all. They also highlight the importance of the topic of the course they attend as it is usually exactly the area where they need to improve “quickly” their knowledge as it is close to the subject of their PhD thesis.
Finally two interesting items these PhD students often bring up in their feedbacks are:

  • their appreciation of having new contacts during the course with other participants most of which are already working in industry, discussing with them brings new perspectives
  • original suggestions  for new topics for courses, in general more state-of-the-art than those received by other course participants

To conclude this testimonial, one of the benefits for the Course Provider is that the participation to the course increases thanks to the PhD students who would not have been able to attend without the Euro-Dots Scholarships. Other benefits are related to the direct contacts and meeting with these students who will eventually become engineers in the industry and will be able to promote the courses to their colleagues in the future. It is very enriching to talk to them and to hear their suggestions for new topics which are often new and which may be seriously considered as future topics of some courses.

The SINANO Summer School has been held in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 in the framework of the SINANO, NANOSIL and NANOFUNCTION projects, that are European research initiatives bringing together the top European Universities, Research Institutes and Companies with expertise in advanced nano-CMOS technology, devices and simulation, bridging the More-than-Moore with the beyond-CMOS domains.

The aim of the Summer School is to further enhance the knowledge of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and professionals in the advanced modeling, simulation and characterization techniques amenable to conventional and novel nano-CMOS devices. It will discuss the device physics and the corresponding models, numerical techniques, programming and simulation tools, and experimental characterization techniques.
This course is accepted by the doctoral schools of the Advanced Research Center for Electronic Systems (ARCES) and Electronic Department (DEIS) of the University of Bologna, Italy.

In this frame the affiliation with the EURO-DOTS organization has been very beneficial for the School organization and for attendees.

In fact the participation to the EURO-DOTS program provided a large visibility of the School Program and a better quality of the Students. Motivated Students with no financial means had a unique opportunity for a professional growth thank to the EURO-DOTS program.

In addition some of the EURO-DOTS requirements, e.g. the mandatory final exam, “forced” the Organizers to effectively improve the implementation of the School.
In view of the past experience the CP is looking very favorably to the EURO-DOTS label and considers it as a real plus when valuating courses for his own Ph.D. students. 

The CP intends to submit to EURO-DOTS a new course for 2014.

As soon as I became aware of the EURO-DOTS initiative I realized it was a win-win model to expand, at my home University, high-quality educational activities at the PhD level in a European framework. The EURO-DOTS collaborative model gives new opportunities to build upon internal scientific competence, complement our University teaching duties, structure and upscale the course quality level and return increased visibility to our institutions. In addition, I found the effort required for the application limited to a very reasonable level, which definitely convinced me to apply.
Once the Course was approved and included in the EURO-DOTS programme, my experience with the EURO-DOTS organization was extremely positive, which convinced me to propose again the Course on Nanoscale MOS transistors in the following years. Thanks to EURO-DOTS grants, an average of 8 students per year could come to our University from all over Europe to attend the lectures. It was a great opportunity also for our internal students to enter a truly international network focused on the specialized topic of Nanoscale MOSFET modeling and to attend lectures from outstanding teachers of EURO-DOTS courses abroad.

Imec Academy has a long tradition in providing advanced scientific and technical training to all its users within (but also outside) the imec community of which PhD students make up a very important part. Imec Academy has therefore developed over the past years, a broad portfolio of courses in the domains of its 3 technical schools: the school for Semiconductor Technology, the school for Biomedical Systems, and the school for Smart Systems. Each of these schools has courses in the EURO-DOTS portfolio and these courses are to a large extent based on imec expertise. These courses are recognized by the Doctoral schools of the 5 universities in Flanders, and as such, the courses qualify for acquiring ECTS  for all PhD students attending. One of the main benefits of the EURO-DOTS portfolio and calendar is that students get an opportunity to travel, get in touch with each other, and can build a network with professionals in the field, who are subscribing to the same courses. The EURO-DOTS channel brings our courses to the attention of a junior student population that currently is not always yet on the imec-academy radar. Moreover it also allows imec researchers to attend advanced courses abroad that are not part of the Imec Academy portfolio but that are relevant and often essential for their research.

More recently, Imec Academy organized a course on Nanotechnology-for-Health on demand of the 5 Flemish doctoral schools. This course was a cross-disciplinary course targeting both the life science and nano-engineering communities. The list of experts was well selected to cover all these topics at PhD level. The main reason for opening the course up to an international audience of PhD students was to broaden the community for networking and to learn from each other. 2013 was the first time this course was organized, so unlike for other domains, there was no long standing tradition for imec in this field. The course in total was subscribed by over 80 participants, 2 amongst them were international scholars.

Imec-academy intends to organize a new session in 2014 with an adapted program. It has the intention to resubmit the course for approval in the EURO-DOTS portfolio.

Important message to the PhD students interested in a EURO-DOTS scholarship!!!

Unfortunately today, on January 15 2015, the EURO-DOTS project has come to an end and no more scholarships can be granted for the time being.

Status EURO-DOTS on 15 January 2015

The EURO-DOTS-2 project has come to an end on 31 December 2014. At this moment there is no prospect about a possible continuation of this initiative, in spite of the huge success of the project and the ambition of the consortium to continue on this path. The success of the past actions cannot be better reflected  than by the more than 220 testimonials (Testimonials) of students whom were granted a EURO-DOTS scholarship in the past 4 years. In these 4 years of EURO-DOTS, 132 course modules have been organized on 61 relevant topics/themes, by 20 course providers from 11 countries. More than 250 lecturers have been involved. More than 300 PhD students, from 19 European countries, have successfully applied for a scholarship. In 2014 40 Courses have been scheduled. The consortium is considering possible actions to keep the EURO-DOTS mission alive and hopefully see the start of a next phase of EURO-DOTS.
